Crawford Background
Here's a brief look at the background of new Dallas Stars coach Marc Crawford.
- Born February 13, 1961 in Belleville, Ontario
- Played junior hockey as a left wing with the Cornwall Royals (QMJHL) from 1978-81, winning the Memorial Cup in 1980 and 1981
- Began his pro career in 1981-82, playing for the Dallas Blackhawks of the Central Hockey League.
- Played as a rookie for the 1981-82 Vancouver Canucks, who made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the New York Islanders.
- Played a total of 176 NHL games over seven seasons, totaling 19 goals and 31 assists. Also played minor league hockey with Fredericton (AHL) and Milwaukee (IHL) over his eight-year professional career.
- After retirement, coached Cornwall (OHL) for two seasons.
- Coached three years with St. John's (AHL), winning two division titles and making it to one Calder Cup Finals.
- Won AHL Coach of the Year Award in 1992-93.
- Became head coach of the Quebec Nordiques in 1994-95 and won Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year.
- Won Stanley Cup as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche in 1995-96.
- Coached Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Canada finished fourth.
- Resigned from the Avalanche job in 1998.
- Was hired by Vancouver in January 1999 and coached the Canucks through 2005-06.
- Crawford is still the subject of a lawsuit stemming from an on-ice incident in 2004 when Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi hit Colorado forward Steve Moore from behind, leaving Moore with three fractured vertebrae.
- About a month after being let go by the Canucks, Crawford was hired by the Los Angeles Kings. He coached the Kings for two seasons before being let go after the 2007-08 campaign.
- During the 2008-09 season he worked as a hockey analyst for CBC.
- Hired by the Dallas Stars as head coach on June 11, 2009
