Memorial Cup: Richards returns to Rimouski
Dallas Stars prospect Jamie Benn wasn't on the ice at the Memorial Cup Wednesday night, but a future teammate got some time in the spotlight. Stars center Brad Richards returned to the city where he played junior hockey to be part of the pre-game ceremonies.
Richards, who played for the Rimouski Oceanic from 1997-2000 and led the team to the 2000 Memorial Cup championship, was joined by former Rimouski and Tampa Bay teammate Vincent Lecavalier. The pair received a standing ovation from the crowd at the Colisee in Rimouski, which is hosting the Memorial Cup Tournament.
"Hockey night was the thing going on here. When you're a teenager, to have that atmosphere every day where you live and breathe hockey, there's nothing but great memories here," Richards said of Rimouski on Rogers Sportsnet. "It was a lot of fun."
In Richards' final season with Rimouski he was the Canadian Hockey League Player of the Year, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League MVP, QMJHL Playoff MVP and Memorial Cup Tournament MVP.
"We were fortunate enough to get a chance to play in the Memorial Cup and win one," Richards said. "It's every junior kid's dream. It's a tough trophy to win."
Drummondville beats Rimouski in OT, advances to semifinals
Gabriel Dumont's goal 13:23 into overtime lifted Drummondville to a 3-2 over Rimouski in the final game of round-robin play at the Memorial Cup Wednesday.
Drummondville goalie Marco Cousineau made 39 saves for the Voltigeurs, who were outshot 41-18 in the contest.
The victory puts Drummondville in the semifinals against the winner of Thursday's tiebreaker game between Rimouski and Windsor.
