The Dallas Stars added another defenseman Tuesday, signing Jeff Woywitka, who had been with the St. Louis Blues, to a two-year, $1.3 million contract.

“We are pleased to welcome Jeff Woywitka to the Stars organization,” Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk said. “He’s gained some solid experience the last few years with St. Louis and we feel he brings valuable depth and stability to our defensive corps.”

Woywitka will get $600,000 in the first year of the contract and $700,000 in the second year, making his cap hit $650,000.

He became an unrestricted free agent last week after the Blues decided not to extend him a qualifying offer.

The 25-year-old Woywitka, who is 6-3, 217 pounds, played 65 games with the Blues last season, picking up three goals, 15 assists and a plus-eight rating. He had no points in four playoff games.

He was a first round pick (27th overall) of the Philadelphia Flyers in 2001. He's played in total of 152 NHL games and has 35 points (six goals, 29 assists).

Tuesday's signing gives the Stars seven NHL defenseman under contract and they still have Mark Fistric, a restricted free agent, to get under contract as well.

The Stars have 20 likely roster players (12 forwards, seven defensemen and one goaltender) under contract for about $46.7 million in cap costs. The actual payroll, including the $1.9375 million buyout cost of Sean Avery, is about $42.6 million.
