Here is the truth about some trade
rumors involving Andrew's younger brother Nick.
Larry Brooks of the New York Post reported that
we were involved in a three-way deal with Philadelphia and
Toronto. We would send Nick to Philadelphia straight up for Eric
Lindros. Then we would send Lindros to Toronto for Nik Antropov,
Daniil Markov and Gary Roberts.
The truth: The talks ended when we informed Pat
Quinn of Toronto that we wanted Mats Sundin, Curtis Joseph and
Tomas Kaberle.
Jim Kelley of the Buffalo News said we had
offered Nick up to Buffalo for Michael Peca and Jason Woolley.
The truth: We never had any talks with Buffalo.
Al Strachan of the Toronto Sun had us involved
in a deal with Phoenix. We would send to Nick to the desert for
Keith Tkachuk and Shane Doan.
The truth: Phoenix did make that offer but we
rejected it, saying we wanted Jeremy Roenick instead of Tkachuk
and we wanted Teppo Numminen as well. Phoenix backed out.
Larry Wigge of The Sporting News in one of his
trade rumors of the day things had Nick going to the Stars in
exchange for Brett Hull and Darryl Sydor.
The truth: Bob Gainey never made any offer. He
did call but before he could get a word out we said it would take
Mike Modano, Jere Lehtinen and Sergei Zubov to get Nick. Gainey
hung up.
Some other Nick trade tidbits: Before he cut the
deal for Rob Blake, Colorado's Pierre Lacroix offered us Adam
Deadmarsh, Chris Drury and Alex Tanguay for Nick. The deal fell
through when we insisted it would take Peter Forsberg, Milan
Hejduk and Adam Foote for the Avs to get Nick.
The Ducks offered Teemu Selanne straight up for
Nick. We said throw in Paul Kariya and you got a deal. There was
no deal.
The Kings offered Blake and Steve Reinprecht for
Nick. We said fine, but you'll have to throw in Luc Robitaille
and Ziggy Palffy in the mix as well. The Kings never called back.
The Penguins offered Jaromir Jagr for Nick. We
rejected it, saying we wanted Martin Straka and Alexei Kovalev
too.
Mike Milbury of the Islanders offered us all of
his goaltenders, including Rick DiPietro, for Nick. We asked him
what he was going to do with out any goalies. Milbury responded
he hadn't really thought about that and would get back to us. We
never heard from him again.
Nick picked up his 20th goal of the season this
week and he also picked up four minutes in penalties. Nick got
the goal for being pretty well behaved while Andrew and Mary
Katherine were on spring break from school. There were no fights,
no scrums and no major incidents.
Nick did pick up a double minor for roughing
after taking another egg from refrigerator and throwing it.
Andrew and Mary Katherine had a quiet,
uneventful spring break.
