Nick Update

NickWe sure were lucky we weren't playing the Dallas Mavericks this past week. That's because Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who whines a lot about officiating, would have been appalled at a call involving Andrew's younger brother Nick.
On a play that should have resulted in major and match penalties, Nick was not penalized at all and instead was awarded his eighth goal of the season.
Call this the case of the missing china cabinet key.
The day after Thanksgiving Mommy couldn't find the key to the china cabinet. She asked Nick if he knew where it was. "Yes," he responded. But Nick saying "yes" is really no big deal. Ask him a question and chances are he'll answer in the affirmative. Ask him if Al Gore invented the Internet and Nick would say "yes." Ask him if that Palm Beach ballot was confusing and he would say "yes."
This time, however, Nick really meant it when he said "yes." He did know where the key was.
He led Mommy to the kitchen window and said, "There it is." And indeed there it was. Actually, it was sitting on the ledge outside of the window. Nick had taken the key and poked it through the screen and the key was now outside the house.
The call on this one appeared easy. Nick would get a major for spearing and a match penalty. But Mommy did not penalize Nick. Instead he was credited with a goal for helping Mommy find the key and showing some good memory skills.
We thought Cuban might show up at our house and tell us "Nice call," the way he does to those NBA referees. We could see him telling the media: "I have no problem [being quiet] if it's a good game, but if a ref steals a game from us, how am I gonna be quiet?"
But he didn't show up and there was no controversy.
Mommy was, however, ready to penalize the rest of us for failing to come to the aid of Nick. In the middle of the night Nick was screaming bloody murder. Mary Katherine, who was in the same room, did not wake up. Neither did Andrew, who was in the next room. Neither did Dad. But Mommy did.
She went into Mary's room where Nick had been sleeping in a bed with Mary. Mommy couldn't see Nick. She asked where he was. "Right here," yelled Nick, who had fallen off the bed and was trapped between the bed and wall. Mommy got Nick out and he escaped injury.
He wasn't so lucky when a mirror fell on him a few days later. Nick, who suffered cuts on his nose and just under it, looked like he had taken a high stick. It was a bloody mess. No stiches required but he probably will be left with a scar.
Nick didn't pick up any penalties this past week. He had a good Thanksgiving. When asked if he liked Thanksgiving he replied, "Yes. I get meat."
